Valentine’s Day Gift Giving Guide
Why is Valentine’s Day the hardest holiday to buy gifts for?! Probably because the minute the last bell ringing in the new year is rung the stores are FULL of hearts and flowers in preparation for V-day. But how do you buy a non-cheesy, non-cliché gift for that special someone? Here’s my recommendations!!
Your Standard Valentine’s Day Gifts
Flowers
Now, you want to know your audience here. Flowers aren’t for everyone. Some people hate the fleeting life of cut flowers…I’m not one of those people…but they are out there.
Tip 1: Buy LOCAL!! Don’t buy from the grocery store. Don’t buy from one of those large online flower conglomerates.
My favorite local flower shops are:
Love Blooms I used Ashley for my wedding and she has been my go to ever since. Plus she’s the sweetest person in the world. She some of her designs I have personally received are below! My favorites are pink and hydrangeas so you’ll see a them.
The Wild Orchid
Tip 2: Shop early!! Order now, like today. Otherwise you will be stuck with Costco flowers.
Tip 3: Not a flower person? Go with a live plant. But again, know your audience. You don’t want to give someone more responsibility without knowing if they’d actually enjoy that.
Chocolates
Tip 1: Again, buy local. Don’t buy a box of chocolates from the corner grocery store. There are so many good chocolate shops local.
My favorites are:
Tip 2: Chocolate shops offer so many other options besides chocolate. Look for something your person actually wants. My favorite are those little fruit slices in different flavors or macaroons!!!
Lingerie
Tip 1: There’s a fine line between sexy and downright uncomfortable. When in doubt lean towards comfort.
Tip 2: Again, know your audience. Lingerie isn’t for everyone. Maybe lean towards a cute PJ set if sexy undies isn’t their thing. Amazon, Target, & Aerie are hidden gems for PJs and Lingerie that are both practical and sexy.
Tip 3: Don’t shop at Victoria’s Secret. Looking for something just as sexy? Try these 3 brands:
Massage
Tip 1: Spas offer so many other services besides a massage. Facials, lasers, manis and pedis. Pick something your loved one is actually going to enjoy
My favorite local spas are:
Tip 2: Maybe MedSpas aren’t their thing. Create an at home spa day! See my previous post to completely design the perfect spa day!
Jewelry
Tip 1: Pick something they’re actually going to wear. If they don’t wear bracelets, seriously, don’t get them one. You’d think that’d be obviously but **shrug
Tip 2: Diamonds are lovely and all but unless you’ve got tons of them, I find it difficult to wear them and not worry constantly. Pick something their going to love and wear all the time.
Not Your Standard Valentine’s Day Gifts
A Romantic Get Away
I would much rather do something then get something. The perfect gift this Valentine’s Day season is something you two can do together!
My husband and I’s first Valentine’s Day together was at Universal’s Harry Potter World. Seriously, I cried during the castle light show. It was truly amazing and something I will never forget!
Totally understand not wanting to spend thousands of dollars on a trip to an amusement park but here are 3 ideas that are more cost friendly:
A lovely dinner followed by a stay at a local hotel. Two of my favorites are:
Hotel Fort Des Moines - PS there is an adorable coffee shop in their lobby
A long weekend in Chicago. My husband I have been here a couple of times. So many things to do and so many romantic hotels to stay in.
A cozy cabin weekend. Vrbo has so many different options for just you and your significant other to “hang out” all weekend together.
A Date Book & Polaroid Camera
So many good date ideas in here! And some of them you don’t have to leave the house for! There is a place to tape your photo next to the date instructions so you can keep a little memory from the date. It’s so much fun and keeps dating interesting. There is always something I haven’t thought of in there and I pride myself on unique date nights!
A Cooking Class
I am a horrible cook. I would love to take a class and learn a bit more about cooking (and I am sure my husband wouldn’t mind it either)! Don’t want to go in person there are lots of different ways you go give this gift!
In Person Classes:
Online Cooking Classes:
Meal Delivery:
A Fitness Class
Maybe you’re both health nuts and enjoy pushing your physical limits. ;) There are so many different fitness studios in town offering a variety of classes! Try a new class together! Usually you can pay a per class fee that isn’t too expensive (and they are sometimes free!!).
Sentimental Gifts
Some gifts are more meaningful then others. They require a lot of thought and are reminiscent of memories past or future. These are probably the hardest gifts to find for one another because each gift means something special to the receiver.
