Brunch Review - HomeGrown

It’s been awhile! But we are back on that brunch train! We tackled the newest brunch location to make it’s way into Des Moines. It prides itself on the everything being made locally.

Ambiance - 9/10

The restaurant has got this farmhouse vibe to it. Multi-colored plank tables, honeycomb tile, the waitstaff wear jean aprons. It very much fit the whole theme of the restaurant.

The space is huge so the sound travels everywhere. It’s also incredibly popular right now so it was packed. It made it a little difficult to hear but not unbearable.

Food - 8/10

We started with sharing the coffee cake & homemade pop tarts. I absolutely LOVED the coffee cake. It comes out warm and you drizzle this caramel sauce over the top. It’s got this cinnamon crumble. God, it was just amazing. I am drooling just thinking about it again. The cinnamon pop tart was equally as good. It was seriously like the OG from the 90s but SOO much better. The blueberry pop tart was seasonal, not my favorite…I don’t really like blueberry flavored things though.

For mains, I had the Florentine eggs benedict. The eggs weren’t runny and that really made me dislike the whole thing. Though the English muffin was delicious and the Hollandaise Sauce was good. It just wasn’t hitting all my buttons. Side of potatoes were good but a bit cold.

If we are talking just the coffee cake & pop tarts then it would definitely be a 10/10. Unfortunately the eggs benedict brought the whole score down.

Mimosa - 9/10

Oh mimosa, my old friend. Oh how I have missed you!! They used homemade OJ & Prosecco. The orange juice to Prosecco ratio was amazing! Not too much orange juice, plenty of Prosecco.

The price was a bit much though, $9.50 for one drink. It just seemed a bit overpriced for the size of the drink itself. If it had been a bit more price conscience it definitely would be a 10/10.

Service - 8/10

Service was great. There was some growing pains that were obvious. Wait staff weren’t certain in their coverage areas but there was great teamwork. We had our primary waitress and then someone that brought our special drinks out and then kitchen staff that brought our food out. Everything was super well planned out and it was clear they worked well together. I imagine with time the growing pains will subside.

BONUS CATEGORY! Coffee - 10/10

This was one of the best specialty coffee drinks I had in a long time! It’s called the Honey Bee. Made with espresso, milk and honey. It was AMAZING! I would go back just for this latte and a slice of the coffee cake!

They were super inclusive and VERY flexible! You could really make any substitutes to your order as you wanted. Gluten free, dairy free, meat free. They had something for everyone. They serve breakfast & lunch all day long. So if you want a cup of soup with your omelet you got it! Check out there full menu below!

Pro Tip: Go early. Otherwise there will be a 2 hour wait!

I will definitely be back!!
